I Monster are my BIG new discovery and Neveroddoreven is definitely one of my favourite albums already. Although not perfect, pretty much every song is good. Crap laptop baterry is about to die sseee ya tomorro!! Ok back again. This album is one of my best ever buys, unfortunately the songs get old quite quickly, meep, but they are all really good! It's a sortof goldfrapp (mainly felt mountain, but with spikes of black cherry and supernature) meets moby (but more ... dunno) meets something like coldplay (a little) meets horror movies meets my head = perfection. Their name is inspired by horror movies and so, to me, is their music. I first discovered them on itunes when I looked under "new releases" and saw "Sucker for your sound - I Monster" and I thought "wow that is such a cool name" I even thought it sounded familiar but obviously not. I then bought sucker for your sound (which is amazing I looove that song) and went to explore their other stuff. Loved the previews. Loved Daydream in blue on youtube. Had art exam next day - 5 or 6 hours of time to burn listening to music, so took a chance. Decided to buy it. Listened to it. Loved it. Say no more. I'm going to review the songs one by one as I feel they deserve it, but only briefly. I'm going to be really critical with the ratings because if I wasn't they would all be 5 stars par one or two which would be 4.
1. Something's Coming (8.7/10)
This track I thought was wacky at first, really cool sounds, good but far from perfect. I really liked it, but my full concentration wasn't on the song. On second listening I fell in love with it's quirkyness. Makes me think of monsters haha and the sounds are great. Gotta love the line "Something's cooking" - I just love it.
2. Daydream In Blue (9.8/10)
I was instantly wowed by this song, and it is a clear outstander on the album, but unfortunately it throws some of the albums other fantastic tracks into its shadow, when they well deserve praise too. Unfortunately, I discovered the song is not entirely their own, but in a way I like it. The song "Daydream" was originally sung by "The Wallace Collection" - its like a hippy flower power song, its a bit weird. Then covered by "Kallerman Choir". I Monster took the opening lines of the cover and used them as a verse, they then did the really cool chorus (the best bit) themselves. Then repeated the verse again later, then continued the whack whack. It was originally meant to be just a remix, but was so successful it has kinda become their own. The lyrics for the chorus, although hard to hear, I have discovered to be very very dirty... baad monsters! Great song, weird, but love it.
3. Hey Mrs. (Glamour Puss Mix) (8.0/10)
This song I wasn't that keen on to begin with. I liked the general tune etc but not the chorus. Now I love the whole thing! Esp the chorus! But I confess the background ist da bomb. I still havn't heard the original of this song, but I do like this mix! The background is very ... thumpy, but gdgd. I love the vocal effects on all these songs I have to point out. Interesting lyrics. I like the way that they don't quite make sense yet they completely do. Although, I tend to find that with lyrics when most people don't get anything from them. I prob have meanings completely wrong but who cares, something clicks. I love the bit near the end where you think the song's over... but it isn't!!
4. Everyone's A Loser (7.6/10)
I again really disliked the chorus of this song at first, well not disliked, but I mean they're all good just in comparison to the others. I love the verses and everything else passionately! But I confess the chorus is still a little off with me, but I do definitely like it more now. There's something there. Maybe it's like Goldfrapp's "Some People" in that it took ages to grow properly but now I love it. I think it's one of the weaker tracks, but then it's saved about 2/3 way through with the "at the end of the spring, there's a beautiful thing" interlude. Then it's awesome.
5. Heaven (9.3/10)
As soon as I heard this song, I thought "Edward Scissorhands". Which is one of my favourite films of all time. The intro sounds shockingly like it. I was gripped, but I confess I overlooked the rest of the song as it was pretty gentle. Again, upon my second listen, now its love. This is one of my favourites on the whole album. Gorgeous music, effects, lyrics. I just love it oh so much. It's Edward Scissorhands crossed with spaghetti western, with a little Ennio Morricone and I can feel the Will G presence. The 'frapp presence too now that I mention it. And of course very original at the same time. Simple but I loooove it! I have many theories about the meaning, most of which I won't share. I some ways I want it to be about that as its odd and hidden innuendo whatever, but in some ways its so beautiful I want it to have a totally innocent meaning. No such luck. Oh who cares I love sexual innuendos :)
6. Who Is She? (8.9/10)
I straight away LOVED this song. However as it has no defining way to separate the chorus I remember thinking that it just never ended!! but now it's over too quick - love this one too!!
7. A Scarecrow's Tale
8. Stobart's Blues
9. The Back Seat of My Car
10. These Are Our Children
11. Sunny Delights
12. The Blue Wrath
Will finish (there are a lot of songs, ok??)
